Ike Leggett

Ike Leggett admitted, in political terms, it is a tough time to be County Executive, but it’s the perfect job to do the right thing. Mr. Leggett reduced the budget by $2bb over the past 4 years. Previously, the budget had increased 14.1% while tax revenues increased around 4% per year. Recently the budget has been decreasing by 4.3%. Managing the budget has its challenges. The 2010 snow storm cost $70mm, while the typical snow removal budget is only $15mm per year. Resolving these problems does not always come with the corresponding respect. Few people know that Mont. County has a larger population and budget than 7 states, including Alaska. Other facts: unemployment in MC is only 5%; 82% of the state revenues from the millionaire tax would come from MC; top 3% of earners bring 45% of local taxes; 80% of the county budget goes to wages and salaries; county jobs were cut by 1000; County Executive budget was reduced by 26%.

Gary Thorud

Gary Thorud, spoke about Hospice Caring and the many services they provide.  Hospice Caring helps with many non medical services that are not reimbursed by insurance; such as feeding, grocery shopping, getting to the doctor, etc., all of which is provided at no cost.  Services are provided by volunteers who go where the patients are. Also, because the recipients of these services are at the end of their life, Hospice Caring supports the families with specific bereavement programs.  They have also created a camp for children ages 8 – 12, called Camp Caring.  The camp was created to bring comfort to children following the death of someone they love.
The budget of $900k, is funded through foundations, donations, and special events.  The quality of the organization earned it the Standard of Excellence award and multiple features in the catalog for philanthropy.  Go to www.hospicecaring.org for more information.

Mark Harris

Mark Harris spoke about the Genocide Intervention Network (GI-NET), which gives concerned Americans the opportunity to help protect civilians from genocide.  GI-NET also gives their members the opportunity to directly protect civilians on the ground, where genocide and mass atrocities are occurring, through their unique Civilian Protection Program. They believe that if given the tools, ordinary Americans can become everyday upstanders against genocide.  In the long term, they believe that empowering individuals to stand against genocide will build the political will necessary for the international community to recognize its responsibility to protect the victims of genocide and mass atrocities.  By investing heavily in individuals and empowering them to be local leaders on their campuses and in their communities, GI-NET provides hands-on opportunities for Americans to make genocide prevention a domestic political issue.

Naomi Collin

Naomi Collins' engagement with Russia began shortly after her marriage in 1963 to James Franklin Collins and continued through her husband's tenure as American Ambassador to Russia, 1997-2001. She first traveled with him to live in Moscow in 1965-1966, and returned in 1973 with their two small sons, where her husband served at the American Embassy and she worked for the United States Information Agency (USIA).  She witnessed the 1991 coup attempt against Mikhail Gorbochav, and the rise of Boris Yeltsin. She watched the crowd’s demonstrations as her husband drove off to meet with potentially hostile Russian authorities. She condensed the experience into four lessons:1) Outcomes are always uncertain 2) People can change history through their response and reaction to events taking place around them. 3) Her personal loss of faith in experts and pundits who try to predict the outcome of events, 4) The role pure chance plays in the outcome of important events.

The purpose of this program is to perform energy audits intended to lower your energy bills, making your home safer and more energy friendly.  The program embarks on a whole house approach, addressing energy efficiency, safety, cleaner indoor air quality, and durability.
